FMCSA Examining Electronic IDs for Trucks

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has granted a petition from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance to consider requiring all interstate commercial motor vehicles, trucks, and buses, to have devices installed that electronically transmit the identity of the vehicle. These “unique identification devices” (UIDs), also known as “universal identification devices,” would allow roadside enforcement to identify and perhaps even monitor the condition of CMVs on the highway.

FMCSA Seeks Answers on Truck ELDs

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently published an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to improve the clarity of existing regulations on electronic logging devices. The agency also wants to address some technical specification issues in response to trucking industry concerns. What FMCSA is apparently trying to avoid are rambling responses or general debate about the need for ELDs or comments on current hours of service rules.

The annual survey asks trucking industry stakeholders to rank the top issues of concern for the industry along with potential strategies for addressing each issue. Now in its 18th year, ATRI’s annual analysis not only ranks the issues overall but also provides insights into how critical topics are ranked differently by motor carriers and professional drivers.  The report also allows stakeholders to monitor issues over time to better understand which issues are rising or falling.

Truckers to Pay Lower UCR Fees in 2023

One would think that the trucking industry would welcome an FMCSA announcement of reduced UCR fees, but this year’s decision was surprisingly contentious. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association challenged several aspects of the UCR board’s decision-making process. OOIDA sits as a voting member on that board.

Welcome FMCSA Administrator Hutcheson

As administrator, Hutcheson leads approximately 1,100 agency employees, 900 of whom work in the four regional service centers and the division offices in each state, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. President Biden earlier nominated Meera Joshi to head up FMCSA, but she withdrew her nomination in late 2021 to take a position with the New York City Mayor’s Office.
