DOT Audit: FMCSA, States Must Improve Oversight of CDL Violations

A new federal audit finds that many state driver licensing agencies are not quickly sharing information about traffic convictions by Commercial Driver’s License holders. Auditors also found that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is not properly conducting oversight of state CDL programs, as required by federal law. The Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation conducted the audit between November 2019 and May 2021.

FMCSA Hopes to Increase Truck Windshield Area for Safety Tech Mounting

Under the FMCSA proposal, the area in which carriers can mount vehicle safety technologies inside a truck windshield would expand from four inches to eight and a half inches below the upper edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers. The other parameters would not change. FMCSA points out that this expanded area for mounting vehicle safety technologies coincides with temporary exemptions already granted for similar devices.

Trucking Legislation in House and Senate Infrastructure Bills

One of the few things Congress must do each session is fund the federal government. Generally, legislators accomplish that through appropriations measures for each of the 15 executive departments. Congress takes that opportunity to tell the departments how to use the taxpayer money appropriated. For trucking, that means Congressional directives to the FMCSA on new trucking regulations and to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on new vehicle standards.

The Truck Speed Limiter Debate Returns

After avoiding congressional leaders’ attention for several years, speed limiters on trucks are receiving renewed interest on Capitol Hill. House members Lucy McBath (D-GA) and John Katko (R-NY) recently reintroduced the “Cullum Owings Large Truck Safe Operating Speed Act.” The legislation would mandate U.S. Transportation Department (USDOT) regulations requiring speed limiters on all new commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), and speed limiting technologies already installed on CMVs manufactured after 1992.

A Different Summer for Truck Driving
