Current EventsHow Federal Trucking Regulations Become Law, Part 1
In part one, we compare regulations to other forms of government action – statutes, studies, pilot projects and guidance. We touch on sanctions that can come from violating regulations and how to contest citations. BlogWhy FMCSA’s Definition of ‘Agricultural Commodity’ Should Matter to You
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has published an interim final rule on the definition of the terms “any agricultural commodity,” “livestock,” and “non-processed food,” for purposes of hours of service regulations. These new definitions clearly impact ag transport, but they also matter to motor carriers who do not haul agricultural and livestock products.
BlogNew Whitepaper Helps Truck Fleets Improve Unsafe Driving and Crash Indicator Scores
FMCSA regards the Unsafe Driving and the Crash Indicator BASICs, along with the Hours of Service Compliance BASIC, as the three most critical of the seven BASICs. “BASICs –Improving Unsafe Driving and Crash Indicator” focuses on these two BASICs and explains how the seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs) work in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program.
BlogFMCSA Seeks Public Comments on Truck “Yard Moves”
Regulatory guidance, as FMCSA has proposed here, does not have the force of law. However, examples provided by regulatory guidance can help drivers and motor carriers to apply complex legal standards in real-world situations. In the case of “yard moves,” FMCSA notes that the history of hours of service and one other HOS special driving category could foster confusion, unless it provides concrete examples of “yard moves.”
BlogMajor Truck Safety Enforcement Events Reveal Areas Needing Improvement
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, the international association of commercial motor vehicle law enforcement agencies and inspectors, conducts three major enforcement events each year. Comparing results from year-to-year provides a glimpse into the areas motor carriers and drivers must improve. In 2020, the data may also indicate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulatory waivers on the safety and compliance practices of the trucking industry.

BlogWhat to Expect with Trucking Regulations in 2021
Can you predict regulatory changes in the future? The political environment in Washington, D.C. often determines which regulations move forward and which do not. Our form of government puts a premium on what is acceptable to Congress and the administration, particularly following an election year with some outcomes still undecided. So any regulatory prognosticator should be transparently uncertain as to the future. Here, though, are topics that should rise to top of mind for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in 2021.
