NHTSA/FMCSA Propose Automatic Emergency Braking for Trucks

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are jointly proposing an automatic emergency braking standard for all trucks above 10,000 pounds, vehicle classes 3-8. Commonly referred to as AEB, the technology uses cameras and radar to detect stopped, decelerating, or slower vehicles in the path of a truck. It then sends a visual and audible warning to the truck driver and automatically applies the brakes. If the truck driver manually applies the brakes, AEB supplements the driver’s effort as needed.

FMCSA Finalizes Guidance on Freight Brokerage Definitions

In an Information Collection Request, FMCSA seeks approval to evaluate the necessary training requirements to allow truck drivers to move from a Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)-equipped truck to a Level 3 ADAS truck.

NLRB Tightens Independent Contractor Standards

The National Labor Relations Board has issued a decision that many observers believe further complicates life for independent contractors, including those in trucking. The decision establishes three major “tests” each with differing factors, to determine independent contractor status, either inside or outside of the trucking industry.

Underrides and Undercounts: The PBS “Frontline” Report on Trucking

Recently, the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) aired a “Frontline” report on “America’s Dangerous Trucks.” The television program focused on an investigation by ProPublica into car-truck accidents where the passenger vehicle underrides the truck chassis, often resulting in fatalities. Unfortunately, by focusing on accident aftermath rather than crash causation, “Frontline” perhaps lost an opportunity to save even more lives.
