PrePass is the most comprehensive, widely utilized weigh station bypass system in North America. There are PrePass-equipped sites across every corridor north to south, east to west and hundreds of places in between.

With PrePass, pre-cleared vehicles can continue at highway speeds without having to stop. PrePass not only saves fleets time, fuel and money, but it helps create greater efficiencies for shippers and supports improved safety for all highway users.

Through PrePass, commercial vehicles from qualified fleets are electronically pre-screened for compliance with federal and state safety and credential requirements. Within seconds of approaching a PrePass-equipped inspection facility, PrePass’ electronic pre-screening quickly lets drivers know if they’re cleared to stay on the road and bypass the truck scales at highway speed, or if they need to pull in.

Technology That Works. Every Time.

PrePass is the only weigh station bypass provider to offer multiple bypass technology options. The PrePass app offers the flexibility of mobile bypass and integration with various ELD systems, phones, tablets and Garmin devices. It also provides expanded bypass location coverage and visual driver safety ALERTS™.

The transponder box may look simple, but the RFID technology inside enables billions of internet devices across the world. With secure and accurate data transmission, the transponder is the only technology capable of electronic toll payments.

My company depends on the time and fuel savings PrePass provides, and my drivers view pre-clearance as a real benefit that makes them more efficient. Therefore, PrePass is a great recruiting tool. In fact, many drivers ask us if we offer PrePass early in the interview process.

Mobile Bypass App

Available on Apple iOS, Android, Garmin dēzl OTR and select ELD devices, the PrePass app uses cellular signals to enable bypassing throughout the U.S. including locations where transponder readers are not installed. The PrePass app also provides driver ALERTS™ including work zones, truck parking, congestion, dangerous slowdowns, rest areas, brake check areas and more. It may be used alone on a mobile device or paired with a transponder. When paired, notifications appear on the app while the transponder provides electronic toll payments and bypassing at third party bypass provider locations.

IT Managers Prefer PrePass

Chief technology officers are looking for technology platforms that improve operations but also work well with their current technology stack. PrePass is the only provider offering multiple bypass technology options to meet the needs of today’s CTO. This means you can tailor the weigh station bypass and toll payment programs for your technology needs.

PrePass enhances your ability to generate profit; provides another layer of data for other business systems; and integrates with telematics systems you may already be using. With a small footprint, data APIs, and cloud-hosted infrastructure in the United States, you know your data is secure and accessible.

Third Party Bypass Provider Integration

One of the benefits of the PrePass transponder is co-operability with other transponder-based bypass programs. By registering the PrePass transponder in these other programs, carriers can bypass at NORPASS, Oregon Green Light and Weigh2GoBC locations using one transponder.

Weigh2GoBC

Coverage includes British Columbia locations. Must visit the Weigh2GoBC website to register for the BCeID and enroll PrePass transponders in the service.

NORPASS

Coverage includes locations in AK, CT, ID, NY, OR, SD, WA and BC. Must contact PrePass to enroll. Carriers must also complete a Waiver of PrePass Data Privacy Policy form.

Oregon Green Light

Must contact PrePass to enroll. Carriers must also complete a Waiver of PrePass Data Privacy Policy form and register with ODOT for a permanent Oregon account.

How PrePass Works

PrePass states have placed signs on the highway alerting vehicles that they are approaching a PrePass-equipped weigh station. As with all weigh stations, trucks are required to be in the right hand lanes. At some locations, there will be two lanes available for bypass, but trucks must remain prepared to stop in the event that they don’t get a green light.

  • 1. Communication

Transponder: Roadway signs alert the driver when approaching the PrePass site. Drivers merge into the right lane. An RFID communication between the in-cab transponder and the reader identifies the truck.

PrePass app: The PrePass app alerts the driver that a weigh station is approaching and to merge into the right lane. A cellular connection is established between the in-cab device and the weigh station.

  • 2. Screening

The PrePass system electronically checks the carrier’s safety and vehicle’s credential (e.g. vehicle registration, IFTA) status. In some states the system also checks the truck’s weight to ensure that it is compliant with the jurisdiction’s regulations. Based on a truck’s clearance status, the PrePass system will send a signal to the transponder and/or the PrePass app.

  • 3. Notification

Transponder: The driver receives a screening result visually and audibly. A green light indicates a bypass and a red light indicates that the driver must pull into the weigh station.

PrePass app: A “Pull-In” or “Bypass” decision displays to the driver. If also using a transponder, a “Follow In-Cab Transponder” alert displays on the PrePass app.

  • 4. Random Selection

To help maintain system integrity, some PrePass trucks are randomly selected and receive a red light or Pull In alert, requiring them to pull into the weigh station where a carrier’s compliance can be confirmed.

  • 5. Last Recall

Transponder: The bypass screening signal will continue to flash for 15 minutes after passing the weigh station. This provides confirmation of the vehicle’s bypass status for both the driver and enforcement.

PrePass app: Last Decision Recall is available within the app’s Main Menu. This allows drivers to show an officer the most recent site passed, the decision alert screen and date of last decision.

PrePass Weigh Station Bypass Benefits

SAVE TIME.

PrePass customers save at least 5 minutes with each successful bypass. As a result, PrePass customers have gained over 80 million hours of productive driver time by reducing weigh station stops.

SAVE FUEL, REDUCE EMISSIONS.

PrePass customers save nearly one half gallon of fuel per bypass. To date, PrePass customers have saved over 380 million gallons of fuel since we began compiling data in 1997.

Drivers Love It.

Avoid congestion near weigh stations and cut risks from merging into and out of traffic.

CONFIDENTIAL, PRIVATE DATA.

Carrier’s data in the PrePass Credentialing Database is confidential. All carrier bypassing data is purged after 90 days.

DRIVER RETENTION.

PrePass has been cited as one of the most desirable benefits for drivers. Carriers utilizing PrePass experience enhanced driver recruitment and retention success.

SAVINGS ADD UP.

An FMCSA report calculates a savings of at least $8.68 per bypass. PrePass carriers have saved more than $7.3 billion in operational costs since 1997.

NO INITIAL COSTS.

Transponders and the PrePass app are provided free to customers, with no minimum use requirements.
