How well do you really know your toll spend?  

Managing toll costs is becoming more complex. Charges come from dozens of agencies, invoices arrive in different formats, and small discrepancies can be difficult to spot. That’s why we recently hosted a webinar on AI Toll Insights, within INFORM™ Tolling that helps fleets turn toll data into actionable insights.  

PrePass® product manager Chandler Love walked through how AI Toll Insights works and where it helps most. The short version:  

  • Fleets can stay in control of toll spend by turning transaction data into actionable insights.  
  • By connecting toll transactions with GPS and vehicle data, fleets can find discrepancies, uncover hidden costs, and make more informed decisions. 

Here are five takeaways you can use from the session:

1. Toll data is more complicated than many fleets expect. 

More than a million commercial vehicles use toll roads every day, and the system behind those charges is far from simple:  

  • 30-plus tolling states. 
  • 90-plus agencies. 
  • Over 5,000 miles of toll roads, most of them running all-electronic systems.  

On top of that, a single charge can depend on vehicle class, axle count, time of day, and distance traveled. The result is more time spent reconciling invoices, less visibility into toll activity, and fewer opportunities to control costs. 

2. Connect toll charges to where vehicles actually traveled.

Most fleets review toll invoices after charges have already been incurred, making it difficult to quickly s discrepancies or unusual activity. AI Toll Insights takes a different approach. It uses GPS data and AI-driven analysis to compare each charge against where the vehicle actually traveled, so a fleet can see whether a toll event lines up with the route and the expected cost.  

AI Toll Insights compares toll transactions against GPS and vehicle data to find what needs attention. Because AI Toll Insights works from transaction data, it also supports plate-only fleets and trailer tracking, so it covers more of your fleet than transponder reads alone.

  • Some help with cost management and route visibility, like express lane usage, max toll charges, and out-of-route activity.  
  • Others help with device accuracy, like plate mismatch, transponder mismatch, GPS Toll Verification, and the unmatched location flags for plates and transponders.  

Each one gives your fleet a starting point to look into. Some fleets have used transponder mismatch insights to show incorrect device assignments or unauthorized transponder activity before unnecessary charges add up.

  • Cuts the admin burden of chasing down charges, supports disputes and recoveries. 
  • Gives fleets data-driven insights they can use for driver coaching and accountability.
