FMCSA COVID-19 Emergency Declaration Extended Again, Through May 2022

UPDATED, Feb. 28, 2022 – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has responded to the COVID-19 variants and to supply chain challenges by again extending its emergency declaration. The updated emergency declaration now runs through May 31, 2022. The prior emergency declaration expired on Feb. 28, 2022. Like the previous version of the COVID-19 emergency declaration, this updated FMCSA response grants motor carriers and truck drivers relief only from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Part 395.3, the maximum driving time for property-carrying vehicles, with certain restrictions.

Legislation Streamlines Truck Driver Credential Process

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, FMCSA issued and extended waivers to ease the challenges that student drivers, truck driver trainers and state driver licensing agencies faced during periods of office closures, physical distancing and personnel shortages. Now, lawmakers have introduced two pieces of federal legislation making permanent some of the regulatory relief provided by those pandemic waivers and streamlining the truck driver credentialing process.

Life-Saving Lessons from Trucking Law Enforcement

State highway patrol officers answer the call every day. Perhaps, because of all we share, we in trucking can learn what steps the highway patrol takes to stay safe on the road. One law enforcement safety organization labeled highway patrol and other police work as “totally unpredictable and inherently dangerous.” No matter what conditions officers face, they remain focused on what they can control. That organization identified Five Tenets, items the officer can control, that lead to improved safety. Four of them speak directly to truck drivers.
