COVID-19 and Trucking, Part 1: Adjusting to a New Future

As the new future for the trucking comes into focus expect change in the very composition of the industry. Many smaller fleets are closing shop. After the initial consumer response to the pandemic, with restocking of shelves driving freight volumes, demand has slowed up. Gone, too, are many local businesses whose shipping needs fed the smaller fleets. Some independent truck drivers are choosing to spend time at home until the economy rebounds and freight rates rise.

FMCSA Extends, Modifies COVID-19 Declaration and Drug Testing Waiver

Updated, September 14, 2020– The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is again extending and altering its Emergency Declaration giving motor carriers and drivers relief from specific federal safety regulations related to the hauling of COVID-19 relief supplies.

FMCSA Issues Final Changes to Truck Driving Time Rules

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced long-awaited and final revisions to truck driver hours of service (HOS) regulations, set to take effect on Sept. 29. Rules affecting the 30-minute required break for drivers, sleeper berth exceptions, driving in adverse weather conditions and short haul exceptions all received modifications.
