Recent CVSA Truck Enforcement Events – Results and Reasons

Few truck operators hope to get pulled over for an inspection. Some motor carriers may not need the attention, but the results of these CVSA activities speak to overall safety conditions on the road – which everyone faces. And those results are worthy of notice. CVSA recently announced the results of three inspection events. Here is what they learned.

Critical Alert: Pay Your UCR Fees by The End of 2021

Motor carriers required to participate in the Unified Carrier Registration program have until the end of the year to register and pay their fees. Otherwise, they face penalties that include losing the opportunity to bypass weigh stations. UCR enforcement will begin on Jan. 1, 2022. The UCR fee payment deadline is Dec. 31, 2021. If you are a carrier that operates cargo-carrying commercial vehicles that cross state and/or international lines, you must have a UCR. There has been no indication that this deadline will be extended.

FMCSA Rule Gives States 60 Days to Revoke CDLs, Permits for Drug Violations

Positive drug test results among commercial drivers increased 13% from a year ago, according to the latest figures from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. However, not all state driver licensing agencies are aware of these violations, and that’s a problem FMCSA is addressing with a new regulation.

Trucking Image Ads Increase Teen Perception of Industry

A special trucking career focus group, aimed at learning what messages are most effective for attracting the next generation of truck drivers, yielded some interesting results. The Trucking Careers Focus group came together earlier this year by the Nebraska Trucking Association and the Nebraska Trucking Foundation, in partnership with the University of Nebraska-Omaha and the American Transportation Research Institute. The organizations were looking for ways to ease the shortage of truck drivers.

The Best Things I’ve Learned About Truck Drivers

My colleagues and I handed out a lot of tickets for violation of “the rules as written.” Those citations hopefully fulfilled the greater purpose of stopping or preventing unsafe behavior by truck drivers and motorists alike. We also witnessed firsthand that truck drivers are actually among the best companions law enforcement could have on the road.
